Optimal correction for continuity and conditions for validity in the unconditional chi-squared test

چکیده

The most usual asymptotic unconditional method for comparing two independent binomial proportions is the chi-squared test. There are various versions of it (with or without continuity corrections), but there has been no exhaustive study about how they behave, about their optimality, nor about the conditions under which the approximation is considered reliable. In this paper these queries are examined by analysing a total of 20 different methods (some of them new), proving that two of the new methods are the optimals, that the same method is not the best in every situation, and that the condition for validity (which depends on the minimum expected quantity, E, and on the imbalance between the samples) is not unique, although a conservative rule for the optimal method (related to that of Haber (1982)) is that the method is valid if the sample sizes are approximately equal or if E > 4.5.

سری آمار: تحلیل جداول توافقی 1 (آزمون‌های کای‌دو)

Assessing of outcomes and risk factors in the form of qualitative variables is common in the most of medical studies and the research objectives are defined as the relationship between these variables. This paper introduces the concepts and basic and applied statistical tests to examine the relationship between these variables in these studies, including chi-square tests. Principles and...

A SIMPLE TEST FOR IDENTIFICATION IN GMM UNDER CONDITIONAL MOMENT RESTRICTIONS By

This paper proposes a simple, fairly general, test for global identi cation of unconditional moment restrictions implied from pointidenti ed conditional moment restrictions. The test is based on the Hausdor distance between an estimator that is consistent even under global identi cation failure of the unconditional moment restrictions, and an estimator of the identi ed set of the unconditional ...

The McNemar test for binary matched-pairs data: mid-p and asymptotic are better than exact conditional

BACKGROUND Statistical methods that use the mid-p approach are useful tools to analyze categorical data, particularly for small and moderate sample sizes. Mid-p tests strike a balance between overly conservative exact methods and asymptotic methods that frequently violate the nominal level. Here, we examine a mid-p version of the McNemar exact conditional test for the analysis of paired binomia...

Conditional and Unconditional Tests (and Sample Size) Based on Multiple Comparisons for Stratified 2 × 2 Tables

The Mantel-Haenszel test is the most frequent asymptotic test used for analyzing stratified 2 × 2 tables. Its exact alternative is the test of Birch, which has recently been reconsidered by Jung. Both tests have a conditional origin: Pearson's chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test, respectively. But both tests have the same drawback that the result of global test (the stratified test) may no...
